From connected cars to automated homes, Reliance Jio wants it all

3 MIN READ

Telecom incumbent player, Reliance Jio, after democratizing telecommunications in the country, now wants a share of the IoT pie as well. Automobile telematics and automated homes are on its Work-in-progress list.

CarConnect

The device dubbed as CarConnect, which of course will use Jio SIM-enabled data, will not only work as a WiFi hotspot within the car, but has features to detect car theft and immobilize it. It will have on-board diagnostics that can warn drivers about handling issues such as driving at high speed in low gear; or send panic alerts in case of untoward incidents. Users can even turn on an engine of the car while sitting in the office and remotely switch on the air-conditioning machine on a hot summer day.

Automated Homes

Jio Home Automation offers a range of smart home automation solutions. Smart surveillance cameras, smart doorbells, alarms, would all be a part of this suite. The company would be using its planned optic fiber network to make homes IoT enabled. These hotspots would be located in public places like gardens, cinema halls, schools and other institutions. The company’s current services, JioCinema, JioTV, currently available on Jio-SIM enable phones, will be extended to smart TVs, through a shield box.

Digital Wallet

Not to be left behind in the race of moving towards a cashless economy, the company has launched Jio Money, a digital wallet to make online payments. It allows a user to activate the payment services across all toll booths and public metros using NFC or near field communication technology. The money will be deducted automatically from Jio Wallet as a user crosses a toll booth or ticketing check post at a metro.
