BullGuard launches a free tool to secure IoT devices

4 MIN READ

BullGuard, an internet and mobile security vendor, has announced — BullGuard IoT Scanner— that helps consumers scan their IoT devices for vulnerabilities. The free tool detects for connected IoT devices in the vicinity that could be vulnerable to hackers.

BullGuard IoT Scanner conducts a quick scan on every connected device operating in the vicinity of a user, that can range from security cameras, baby monitors, Smart TVs, wearables and even smoke alarms, which are prone to risks from hackers. If a user is at risk and his smart device is flagged as insecure, the scanner automatically displays the details about the specific security issues. The scanner gives the results in a simple manner so that is easy to understand, followed by a more detailed review, for those eager to learn more.

“The Internet of Things has moved rapidly from an early adopter market into the mainstream, but in doing so has introduced a range of new security concerns for consumers,” says Paul Lipman, CEO of BullGuard.

“We’ve made an important first step towards addressing these issues with IoT Scanner, a tool that allows anyone to check if smart devices in their home are secure”.

The IoT Scanner uses data from Shodan.io, a search engine for internet connected devices, to scan for vulnerable smart devices. The company claims that the device is designed to scan most of the popular devices. An email report of scan results can help users diagnose problems further, and users can share notification of successful scans with friends and family to encourage them to protect their own smart devices.

“The responsibility for ensuring that connected devices are secure is shared between consumers, manufacturers and security vendors, and it’s important that each does their part,” Lipman added. “We have developed the BullGuard IoT Scanner to put consumers in control. It’s fast, easy and free, and offers vital peace of mind.”

The IoT scanner can be directly accessed from the BullGuard website. There is also a free, downloadable IoT guide made available for consumers, which informs users about issues pertaining to Internet of Things security along with help and advice on how to ensure connected devices are not visible to hackers.
