CRM company, Salesforce has signed a definitive agreement to acquire California-based software analytics platform, Coolan that provides data center hardware analysis and optimization. The buyout was made for an undisclosed amount and the legal details of the deal haven’t surfaced yet.

Coolan which was co-founded by Amir Michael (CEO), Yoni Michael and advisor Jonathan Heiliger, specializes in analytics and facilitates its users SaaS-based solution that provides detailed component-level analytics on hardware performance. According to the company website, it also offers a customizable dashboard and Application Programming Interface (API) that reportedly aggregates multiple data streams and makes hardware operations simple and easy to understand.

Before chairing the post of CEO at Coolan, Michael had worked with Facebook and Google where he was responsible for designing customer hardware, developing server and data center infrastructure respectively. He had also participated in initiating Facebook’s Open Compute Project and will continue working to “further its mission of making hardware open, efficient and scalable.”

Michael made the deal public in a blogpost and said:

“Once the transaction has closed, the Coolan team will help Salesforce optimize its infrastructure as it scales to support customer growth around the world.”

According to a report in Business Journal, the shake of hands will aid Salesforce, 10 Coolan employees while Michael makes his way into the boardroom at Salesforce.

Powered by machine learning, Coolan claims to analyze collective event data from customer base and present data-driven insights on utilization rates, outages, and performance trends to improve the efficiency of IT deployment and lower operating expenditures. And might help Salesforce do the same.

Although it isn’t very long when the news of Salesforce choosing Amazon Web Services (AWS), a public cloud storage to host its cloud infrastructure and build its IoT suite, came to the fore. Which makes us wonder, why Salesforce needs the extra help it is buying?

Coolan came into being in the year 2013 and since has seen only 1 round of seed funding of an undisclosed amount by Social Capital Partnership and North Bridge Venture Partners. It shared the market space with companies like GoodData and Alation.

Earlier, Salesforce had also spent over $2.8 billion in an all-cash deal to acquire enterprise e-commerce solution, Demandware to extend its reach beyond the cloud-based CRM platform and dive into the e-commerce market.
