Juniper to acquire AppFormix to leverage big data, machine learning

4 MIN READ

Networking company, Juniper Networks, announced it’s intent to acquire AppFormix, an innovator in cloud operations management. However, Juniper did not disclose the acquisition price.

Founded in 2013 by Sumeet Singh, AppFormix, leverages big-data analytics and machine learning in a distributed architecture that puts the power of self-driving infrastructure at the core of most any cloud.

According to the company, this acquisition will bring the power of analytics through machine learning and telemetry to Juniper’s customers.

AppFormix works with any OpenStack or Kubernetes distribution and helps operators gain real-time insights into the state and health of their clouds. It then allows them to take action based on this information (and to automate many of those processes). The service also features some automated orchestration tools that help operators avoid the kind of resource contention that can often slow workloads down. All of this is built on top of a big data analytics and machine learning platform — and that’s likely what Juniper is most after.

Juniper plans to pair AppFormix’s telemetry and operations management smarts with its Contrail product line. “When paired with Juniper’s Contrail product line, AppFormix improves cloud orchestration, security, accounting, and planning,” Juniper notes in today’s announcement.

The company believes that Juniper customers will benefit from a smarter, automatic, and agile operational experience at lower total costs.

“As we have worked on large-scale deployments of hybrid clouds with SaaS providers and NFV with telecom service providers, we realize at Juniper Networks that some of the biggest obstacles to adoption and growth of these environments are operations and workload management.” the company said in a blog post.

Applying machine learning technology, AppFormix is redefining telemetry and operations management across software-defined infrastructures and application software layers. AppFormix’s technology is designed to provide public, private and telco cloud operators in both OpenStack and Kubernetes environments, real-time and historic monitoring, visibility, and dynamic performance optimization.

“The networking industry is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, and new technologies like analytics and machine learning are enabling companies to have more insight into their network than ever before,” said Pradeep Sindhu, founder, vice president and CTO at Juniper Networks.

“We recognize our customers’ needs and desires for a self-driving infrastructure; one that is optimized, secure and automated. With the acquisition of AppFormix, we’re accelerating our vision to use software automation and intelligence to deliver a smarter network and more simplified operations for our customers around the world.” he added.

The acquisition is expected to be closed by the fourth quarter of 2016.
