AWS bolsters cloud capabilities, buys IDE startup, Cloud9
Amazon Web Services (AWS), in efforts to bolster its cloud computing capabilities has acquired San Francisco-based Cloud9, an online integrated development environment (IDE) for developers to code and collaborate. The comapny has a core development team placed in Amsterdam that will offer cloud-based services for building web and mobile applications.
Ruben Daniels, Founder and CEO, Cloud9 announced the acquisition in a blog post, however the financial and legal terms of the deal were missing. He said:
We will be joining the Amazon Web Services family, and we’re looking forward to working together on terrific customer offerings for the future.In the blog, Daniels also hinted that the company investors and users will still see usual business. “We’ll continue to work with our Ace Open Source community and to provide our innovative services to you and our hundreds of thousands of customers. Over time, we’ll work with AWS to do even more on your behalf,” he continued. Cloud9’s IDE that offers an Ubuntu workspace in the cloud as an alternative to traditional desktop-based development environments, claims to support over 40 languages, with class A support for programming languages like PHP/Apache , Ruby, Python, JavaScript and Go. It also claims to offer general-purpose coding tools and features like a Built-in Terminal for command-line wizardry, Language Tools for code completion, a debugger, a customizable user interface, an image editor and live previews of how apps will look on more than 300 combinations of browser and OS. Cloud9 was found in the year 2010 and since has participated in 3 rounds of funding. Its IDE has raised and cashed $7.3 Million. The latest funding round was on Nov 03, 2014 for an undisclosed amount. Some of Cloud9 IDE’s investors include Balderton Capital LLP and Accel Partners. It boasts of providing services to companies like Soundcloud, Atlassian, Mozilla and Salesforce in the market with competition from third-party IDE providers like Koding and Nitrous.
