Internet now has 329.3M domain name registrations
The internet, according to a report released by Verisign, added approximately 2.3 million domain name registrations globally in Q4 of 2016, a growth of 6.8% YoY, taking the number of top level domains (TLDs) name registrations to 329.3 million as of December 31, 2016.
Verisign is a global domain names and internet security provider. The report said that the .com and .net TLDs had a combined total of approximately 142.2 million domain name registrations in the domain name base3 in the fourth quarter of 2016.
This represents a 1.7 percent increase year over year. As of December 31, 2016, the .com domain name base equaled 126.9 million domain name registrations, while the .net domain name base equaled 15.3 million domain name registrations.
New .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 8.8 million during the fourth quarter of 2016. In the fourth quarter of 2015, new .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 12.2 million.
As of December 31, 2016, the top 10 TLDs were .com (126.9 million), .cn (21.1 million), .tk (18.7 million), .de (16.1 million), .net (15.3 million), .uk (10.6 million), .org (10.4 million), .ru (6.3 million), .xyz (6 million) and .nl (5.7 million).
